This is actually a fairly new work in progress and so far, is all in oil. I really like taking photos of my work and then looking at the photos. It gives me a totally different perspective than when I look at the actual painting, and it becomes more clear to me what I want to do next. On this painting, I feel like I need some dark areas in the mass that's at the lower and the edges. I'm trying to get the texture of moss covered rocks. I'd like to take a tutorial on painting rocks.

Here's an updated version of the painting that I'm calling Eruption (I decided that the shape in the center is an eruption). In my attempt to break up the red line, I'm afraid I went overboard - now the yellow and red/orange shapes look angular.
Yes, holding them up and looking at them in a mirror used to work too but now its so easy to use photos you can take time and contemplate.
ReplyDeleteDo you see how you have a dark red stripe doing through all of the front forms without interruption? That flattens the shapes out. If you want those forms to be more 3-d bring the lighter orange up around and interrupt that stripe in the center forms. (It does have the nice moss texture)
I think the brighter yellow just above is working without turning into a stripe because the green comes up and interrupts what could read as a stripe.
I like the hint of orange up in the upper left and the depth of the dark blue behind the pinky shapes on the right. Itrs the yellow/white textures on the brighter blue int he center that feels confusing to me. Its like water splashing but yellow. Can you define the form to give the viewer more guidance? It might not matter if it were not close to dead center in the picture plane, which tells us its important. Is this helpful or confusing?
Very helpful. I think the stripes may have occurred because I was painting with a palette knife, and I didn't notice them until you pointed them out! The form in the center was completely unplanned (part of the original background painting). I'll have to look at it and see if I can figure out what to do with it.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to the next version!
